Artists and musicians in the North East have embraced the digital challenge. DAVID WHETSTONE explains how they are using a special website to reach new audiences
The Space – or thespace.org – is an experiment by Arts Council England and the BBC aimed at sharpening up digital skills across the cultural sector while challenging artists to respond to the demands and possibilities of the digital world.
The Arts Council invested £2.5m of its lottery-generated digital innovation fund in The Space, making grants available to arts and cultural organisations.
The BBC added a support package worth £2m and including technical know-how, training and mentoring for successful applicants.
The website had a soft launch in May, meaning it has crept up on people who enjoy the arts.
